You can't really visit a British seaside resort without taking a stroll along the prom and treating yourself to a portion of battered fish, chips and mushy peas. During our recent weekend break to glorious Brighton and having walked a gazillion miles hunting the brilliant Brighton Snow Dogs we decided to take a little break to enjoy a lunchtime nibble. The arches under the prom that line the seafront is home to Lucky Beach and as we strolled past we couldn't help but be enticed in by their tasty looking menu.
Lucky Beach spills out from under the arches and onto the street outside and I imagine it would look just like an Australian beach club in the summer time when the sun is out. However even on a late November afternoon, Lucky Beach was pulling in the punters, so much so that the servers seemed pretty rushed off their feet. We were told to take a seat and someone would be over to help us and it did take a little time before someone did. This was OK for us today whilst we were in no rush to be anywhere but you might not want to come when they are busy if you have a tight schedule to keep too.
We decided to embrace the Great British seaside weather and plonked ourselves in the seating area outside, right on the edge of Brighton's famous pebble beach. Well, we actually thought it was quite a mild day, perfect for snuggling in our coats and scarves and just to make sure that we were warm enough we decided to order Lucky Beach's seasonal Christmas orange and cinnamon hot chocolate. Arriving at the table, the waft of those festive flavors rising from the cups was enchanting and the orange rind gave it a proper citrus kick. We were soon warmed up and ready to tuck into some seaside scran.
Lucky Beach's lunch menu consists of classic favorites like sandwiches and wraps alongside salads whilst those with bigger appetites will love the organic burgers (we spied some coming out of the kitchen and they looked delicious.). Those just looking for a little nibble to last until tea time can even just enjoy a portion of chips and curry sauce. Lucky Beach's curry sauce was right up my street. Thick, sweet and with a spicy kick, our skin on fries didn't stand a chance as they were dunked in head first. The best thing about the curry sauce is that (at the timing of writing) it is free! Doesn't get better than that really does it!
Then of course there is the main event, my fish, chips and mushy peas. I don't eat a lot of battered fish from the chippy as I find it heavy and greasy. This local hake fillet however was encased in a crispy batter that fell away from the meat without an ounce of grease anywhere to be seen. The hake itself was perfectly cooked, flaking away on the fork in gorgeous plump pillow like pieces. The tartar sauce was yummy (I just wished there was more!) whilst the mushy peas were piping hot and perfect for sitting out by the seafront and tucking into. A true class act!
Now that we had refueled and warm ourselves off we headed off to continue our walk along the Brighton seafront. If you fancy some classic seaside grub done really well then you won't go wrong with a trip to Lucky Beach. The ideal seaside location for some fabulous fish, you'll be thanking your lucky stars that you gave them a punt!
